Always get a physical sample of the actual printing on the actual tin shape. Not a flat proof. Not a digital render. The physical tin. If a supplier pushes back on providing a pre-production sample, that's not a partner—that's a gamble.
Mistake #2: Trusting "Food-Grade" Without Documentation
In 2019, I ordered 2,000 round tin boxes for a cookie client. The supplier—a well-reviewed vendor on a sourcing platform—confirmed "food-grade coating" in writing.
What I didn't ask: Which standard? FDA 21 CFR? EU 1935/2004? Or just "we think it's fine"?
Three weeks after the client filled the tins with butter shortbread, we got complaints about a metallic taste. The inner coating wasn't rated for high-fat foods. Butter, as it turns out, acts as a solvent for certain cheap coatings.
