xTool S1 20W Laser: The Purchase That Changed How I Buy Equipment
I would buy the xTool S1 20W laser again, but only if I budgeted for the whole setup first. That opinion comes from a year of running it in our small product studio, not from a spec sheet. The laser itself did its job. The setup around it made the difference.
I handle purchasing for a 22-person studio that makes small batches of custom hardware and branded goods. When I took over purchasing in 2022, I compared invoices line by line. In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I started looking at total cost across a year, not cost on one purchase order. A supplier who looked cheaper on a single order ended up costing us about $2,100 in rejected expenses, reorders, and lost shop time. That lesson stuck with me.
So when production asked for a desktop laser, I didn't ask which model makes the best first impression. I asked what it would take to make repeatable parts in our space.
Laser engraver table? Start there
The first hidden cost is physical setup. The S1 is smaller than a full-size cabinet laser, but it still needs room for the machine, the workpiece, the operator, and the air path. We cleared about a 3 x 4-foot area. Maybe 3 x 5, give or take. I almost turned the spot down because it felt like too much space for a desktop tool. It wasn't.
And before you choose a machine, look at the laser engraver table you plan to use. Not a giant fixture, just a stable, fire-safe surface. We tried our existing wooden cart and it moved too much. We ended up with a steel-topped worktable on locking casters. Should mention: a wobbly table changes the focus, and that costs time.
You will also need to solve smoke removal. For our setup, an xTool S1 exhaust fan was the piece that made the engraver part of the shop instead of a dust collector. I put that fan in the budget before I asked about any higher-power laser module. If the smoke lingers, nobody uses the tool. That is a purchasing reality that doesn't show up on the spec sheet.
Why the xTool S1 20W laser was the middle option that made sense
Our machine uses the 20W laser module, not the 10W or the 40W. We mostly cut wood, acrylic, and leather, and we engrave coated metal parts for prototypes. The 20W gave us enough speed and depth for those jobs without pushing the project budget into 40W territory. If we had bought a 40W module on day one, we would have spent money we needed for the exhaust, rotary fixture, and table.
Maybe I'm wrong for another shop, but our bottleneck was never power. It was setup time and smoke management.
Let's talk about cutting metal with laser
If you search for cutting metal with laser because you think a desktop diode laser will slice through steel, pause. That isn't what this tool does. A diode laser like the S1 can mark or engrave some metal surfaces, especially coated or anodized metal. It won't cut thick steel plate. If your actual job is metal cutting, you need an industrial metal-cutting laser, which is a completely different budget category.
That distinction matters for total cost. The wrong assumption can turn a useful engraver into an expensive disappointment. We checked the xTool settings library in January 2025, and the material guidance for the S1 clearly separates engraving-metal settings from cutting non-metal materials. Following that list saved us from wasted material.
Is it the best leather engraving machine for our work?
Someone in the shop asked if we bought the best leather engraving machine. I don't like that question. Leather varies by tannage, finish, and dye. A machine that does great marks on vegetable-tanned tooling leather might struggle with painted or heavily finished leather. What the S1 gave us was repeatability. After a few test pieces, we dialed in low-power settings that worked on our key tags without burning the edges.

The purchase price trap
By the time I added the exhaust fan and the worktable, someone asked if a cheaper laser would have been fine. That is exactly the wrong question. A cheaper quote does not include the cost of making it work in your environment. We didn't buy this model because it was the cheapest. We bought it because the total cost of getting the S1 into production was lower than the alternative when I counted wasted time, support, and troubleshooting.
Would I buy it again? Yes. Not because the xTool S1 20W laser is perfect. It has limitations. But it did what we planned, we budgeted for the exhaust and the table, and it earns its space in the shop. That is the way I look at every equipment purchase now.
The cheapest laser is only cheap until you add the days it doesn't get used.
