Why 'Glowforge Aura Wattage' Is the Wrong Question If You Want to Start a Laser Engraving Business

In September 2022, I stood in my workshop watching a laser do almost nothing to 40 stainless-steel tumblers. The machine was running, the focus was right, and the logos still weren't there. That job ended in a refund, a rushed replacement, and a loss of about $1,900. It happened because the question I asked before buying my first desktop laser was "What is the wattage?" instead of "Will this laser actually process the material my customers are asking for?"

So when I see a search for "Glowforge Aura wattage" sitting next to "desktop laser engraver for metal" and "how to start a laser engraving business," I recognize the pattern. I did the same thing. I wanted a spec that would make the business plan feel safe. The spec exists. It just doesn't do the work I wanted it to do.

The wattage question, answered the way I wish someone had answered it

If you want the short version: the Glowforge Aura craft laser is a desktop laser, and its output is commonly listed around 15W. Don't hold me to that exact figure—some spec sheets quote optical output, others quote input power, and comparing those is like comparing miles per gallon to top speed. The more useful statement is that the Aura is designed for materials like wood, leather, acrylic, and laser-ready coated blanks. "Craft laser" isn't a put-down. It tells you what the machine ships to do.

Wattage isn't meaningless. It tells you how much energy the beam delivers, which affects cutting speed and thickness. What it doesn't tell you is whether a given material will absorb or reflect that energy, and that's exactly where the metal surprise comes from.

"Desktop laser engraver for metal" hides the real question

Most beginners hear "metal engraving" and picture a machine carving a visible groove into a bare stainless-steel bottle. That's understandable. But in laser shops, metal engraving usually means one of three different things: marking a prepared surface, engraving a coating, or cutting actual metal. Those jobs need different wavelengths, different speeds, and different expectations.

Here's something most vendors won't tell you: desktop laser metal work is usually surface marking. Anodized aluminum changes color where the beam hits it. Coated stainless steel develops a mark because the coating reacts. Laser-friendly metal blanks already have a layer designed to turn dark. Those all make great products. But they are not the same as cutting a groove into raw steel.

That isn't a knock on the Aura or any other desktop laser. I use a Glowforge Aura in my studio. It's a good machine for what it was built to do. But I only bought it after I changed the question from "what can this laser do?" to "what will my actual jobs be made of?"

The order that turned into the $1,900 lesson

In September 2022, I accepted an order for 40 stainless-steel tumblers with a client's logo. I checked the wattage, I checked my settings, and I ran a test piece. The test piece came out beautifully. Production was a disaster.

My test blank was a laser-friendly coated bottle from a supplier's sample kit. The production bottles were bare stainless steel. They looked similar. The laser knew the difference quickly. I said, "I can laser-engrave stainless steel tumblers." The client heard, "He can engrave our bare steel tumblers." We used the same words while imagining different processes, and the mismatch surfaced only after the first batch was heat-stained.

I reordered the correct blanks from the supplier I should have used in the first place, paid for expedited shipping, and ran the job a second time. When I finally added up the wasted blanks, the rush fees, and the extra hours, the total landed around $1,900.

What stung wasn't only the money. I had chosen that machine by wattage. I had spent weeks comparing power specs and very little time asking what my customers would actually hand me. That's a process problem, and no spec sheet number was going to fix it.

The costs that never fit on a spec sheet

After that order, I started calculating total cost per completed job instead of total cost per machine. That single change caught more problems than any wattage comparison ever did. The real categories were sample kits, test materials, coated blanks, exhaust filters, replacement lenses, packaging, rework time, and shipping mistakes.

Shipping is the one beginners ignore hardest. I underquoted it for months. The USPS definitions matter more than most people think:

USPS Business Mail 101 (pe.usps.com/businessmail101) lists letter thickness max at 0.25 inch and large-envelope thickness max at 0.75 inch. Items above those limits usually move to parcel rates. Verify current rates at usps.com before quoting shipping.

That may sound like an admin problem, not a laser problem. But if you're making $8 of margin on a small engraved product and shipping costs $5 more than you quoted, the order just became charity.

Marketing wording was another hidden cost. I used to write "we do metal engraving" on my site. That statement was true in a narrow sense and misleading in a broader one. Now I describe the actual service: laser marking on anodized aluminum and coated stainless steel. The FTC's advertising guidance (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing) makes the same point in plainer language: claims should be truthful, not misleading, and backed up by what you can actually deliver. Specific wording costs nothing and prevents angry customers.

Replace the wattage question with better questions

If I were starting today, here is the checklist I would run before buying anything:

  • Name the material before you name the machine. Write down the first batch of jobs you realistically expect. If they're mostly wood, acrylic, leather, and coated blanks, the machine choice becomes easier and more honest. If a customer says "metal," ask which metal, which finish, and which result they expect.
  • Test the actual blank before quoting volume. Buy the exact blank from the supplier you plan to use, run the job at full production settings, and then run it again. One pretty test sample means nothing until you can repeat it.
  • Calculate the total cost of one finished order. Include the machine, ventilation, exhaust or filter, sample materials, replacement consumables, packaging, shipping, and the value of your own time when something needs a second pass.
  • Describe the service the way a skeptical customer would check it. If you say "metal engraving," be ready to explain which metals and which coatings are included. That saves refunds, reviews, and credibility.

If your plan is custom wood signs, cutting boards, keychains, acrylic gifts, and coated-metal bottles, a Glowforge Aura can absolutely be part of a real laser engraving business. I run those jobs most weeks. But if your mental picture starts with bare steel and a deep engraved groove, no wattage number will close that gap.

Bottom line: wattage tells you how much power the beam has. It doesn't tell you whether you can deliver a profitable order. That answer only appears when you test the real material, calculate the real cost, and describe the real capability. I learned that the $1,900 way so you don't have to.
