Common Mistakes Before You Approve
I reject roughly 12% of first deliveries I review. Almost none of those rejections are the vendor's fault — the spec was never clear to begin with. This checklist exists so that doesn't happen to you.
If you're sourcing tin cans, tea tins, tin cans with lids, or a round cookie tin for the first time, this will save you a redo. Seven steps. No theory. Just walk through them in order.
Who This Checklist Is For
You're placing a first order in the 500 to 50,000 unit range. Or you're switching a product line from flexible packaging into metal. Or you've been through one round of tin can packaging and the samples didn't match expectations but you couldn't articulate why.
This is not for someone running a million-unit confectionery line with a dedicated packaging engineer. They already have protocols. This is for the brand manager, the product lead, or the operations person who's suddenly responsible for evaluating a metal tin box with lid and doesn't have a reference point.
The 7-Step Checklist
Step 1: Lock the Substrate Before Anything Else
"Tin can" is a catch-all. Your actual substrate could be tinplate (electrolytic tin-coated steel), aluminum, or ECCS (electrolytic chromium-coated steel). They look similar. They behave differently under drop, moisture, and printing pressure.
Get this in writing:
- Base metal type
- Thickness in millimeters or mils (0.23 mm / 9 mil is common for mid-weight; cookie tins often use 0.25–0.28 mm)
- Surface finish (bright, matte, lacquered, printed)
In my first year sourcing, I made the classic specification error: assumed "standard" meant the same thing to every vendor. One batch came in at 0.04 mm thinner than our drop-test baseline. Cost us a $600 redo and two weeks of delay.
Step 2: Define Lid Type AND Tolerance Range
Tin cans with lids come in push-fit, slip cover, screw-top, hinged, and crimped varieties. Each has a different fit feel — and a different cost.
Specify the lid type. Then specify the fit. Not "should fit snugly." Give a pull-force or snap-range target in Newtons. If your vendor can't state a number, that's a red flag (not a deal-breaker yet, but a signal they haven't done this often).
Here's something vendors won't volunteer: "standard lid" often means whatever they have tooling for. You could be designing for a retail shelf presentation and getting an industrial-thread lid that requires a tool to open. Ask to see the lid in a physical sample before production.
Step 3: Address Interior Coating and Food-Contact Compliance
For tea tins, round cookie tins, or anything touching consumables, the interior coating matters more than most first-time buyers realize.
A basic lacquer is fine for dry goods with low aroma. But high-aroma products (tea, spices, coffee) need a barrier that prevents flavor migration into the metal and metal notes into the product.
Ask these three questions before approving a quote:
- What interior coating is applied? (Epoxy-phenolic, polyester, BPA-NI options, etc.)
- Has migration testing been performed? Which lab? (SGS, Intertek, Eurofins)
- Is there written FDA 21 CFR or EU 10/2011 compliance documentation?
This step may add 5–8% to unit cost. Do not skip it to save that margin. The downside risk — a recall, a customer complaint, a reformulation — is not worth the savings.
Step 4: Set Print and Color Standards with a Number
Your tins will have printed decoration. Print drift is normal. The question is how much drift you'll accept before rejecting.
Industry standard color tolerance is Delta E < 2 for brand-critical colors. Delta E of 2–4 is noticeable to trained observers; above 4 is visible to most people. (Reference: Pantone Color Matching System guidelines.)
Put that number in the contract. Add a clause: "Brand primary color must fall within Delta E 3.0 of approved reference. Batch exceeding this threshold is subject to rejection at vendor's cost."
Also: confirm CMYK conversion before production. Pantone 286 C (a common corporate blue) converts to approximately C:100 M:66 Y:0 K:2, but on tinplate with a gloss varnish, the result shifts. Print a physical proof. Don't approve color over email.
Step 5: Calculate Total Cost of Ownership, Not Unit Price
This is where most buyers get burned. Two quotes side by side — you naturally look at the smaller number. But the real cost of tin can packaging includes:
Unit price + plate/setup fee + tooling (if custom shape) + freight + duties + warehousing + defect rate + rework cost (if needed) = actual cost.
I've seen this play out cleanly: Vendor A quotes $0.78/unit with a $500 setup. Vendor B quotes $0.91/unit all-inclusive. On a 5,000-unit order, A totals $4,400 and B totals $4,550. Looks like A wins.
But A's coating spec was thinner, defect rate ran 4%, and the rework delayed a product launch by eight days. The $150 "savings" cost us somewhere between $3,000 and $6,000 in launch slippage.
Run the total cost math before you compare quotes. Even if you're missing numbers — estimate them. The $500 quote that becomes $800 after setup and freight is not cheaper than the $650 all-inclusive quote.
Step 6: Ask About Repeat-Order Consistency
Most quality issues don't appear on the first order. Vendors treat first orders carefully. The dip happens on order two, order three, order five — when the account is "established" and attention moves elsewhere.
Ask your vendor directly: "When was your most recent repeat customer's third order? Can I see the spec sheet from their first order compared to their most recent?"
If they can't produce this, that's a signal. Harsh? Maybe. But consistency across reorders is what separates a vendor you keep from a vendor you replace in six months. If you've ever had a supplier's quality quietly degrade after the relationship felt "safe," you know exactly why this question matters.
Step 7: Run a Drop and Stack Test Before Bulk Production
Test the sample in conditions that reflect actual storage and shipping — not your desk. Specifically:
- Drop test from 1.2 m onto corners and edges (ISTA 1A or your regional equivalent)
- Stack test at your actual warehouse stacking height, loaded, for 72 hours
- Vibration simulation (or honestly — just ship a sample to a colleague via standard courier and inspect on arrival)
If the lid pops off, the coating chips, or the body deforms — better to find out now than after 5,000 units are printed and packed.
Common Mistakes Before You Approve
A few things I've learned the hard way, or watched others learn:
Don't assume metal packaging can be "fixed." You can't shave down a thick gauge. You can't re-coat a peeled interior on finished goods. Metal is less forgiving than flexible packaging in this respect — the spec has to be right before production starts.
Don't skip the physical proof step. Digital proofs lie. Monitor calibration lies. The only thing that tells you what the round cookie tin actually looks like is a printed sample in your hand.
Don't let the first batch be the test batch. Run all seven steps on the pre-production sample. Skipping steps to save a few days upfront usually costs more weeks downstream.
The whole checklist takes about 90 minutes to walk through with a vendor. That's it. Done.
