Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss ink migration testing, grease resistance, and color consistency across different paper stocks. Why I trust material testing more than vendor promises

French fry paper cones

BBQ paper for grill

Today, if you want printed BBQ paper, you need a heat-resistant ink and a paper that won't char or transfer. I've seen logos turn brown and flake off on the grill.

Rabbit paper plates

Rabbit paper plates are often used for Easter or children's parties. The cute factor is high, but the compliance bar is the same. These plates touch food directly. The ink must be food-safe, and the plate itself must be made from virgin or approved recycled fiber. I've rejected plates that used recycled newspaper fiber with unknown ink contamination. It's not worth the risk.

What most buyers get wrong

Most buyers focus on the printed piece and completely miss the storage conditions. I've seen beautiful packaging ruined because it sat in a humid warehouse for three weeks. The ink absorbed moisture, the colors shifted, and the boxes warped. That quality issue ruined 8,000 units in storage. Now we specify humidity-controlled storage for all printed food packaging.

When the standard approach doesn't apply

This checklist assumes you're ordering at least 1,000 units of a standard product. If you need fewer than 500 units, a local digital printer might be more economical—you'll pay more per piece but avoid setup fees and minimums. If you need custom die-cut shapes or unusual finishes, online printers often can't help. And if you need same-day in-hand delivery, local is your only option.

Also, not every product needs the same testing. Napkins for dry cookies don't need the same grease resistance as a burger box. Match the test to the use case. Don't over-spec, but don't under-spec either.
