When Tin Box Packaging Isn't the Right Choice
Who This Checklist Is For
If you're sourcing tin box packaging, metal tin gift boxes, or storage tins with lids, this checklist is for you. It's the same seven gates I walk through before I approve any run over 500 units. Not because I enjoy process—because skipping any one of them has cost me something.
I've been reviewing packaging deliveries for 6 years now. Roughly 220 SKUs a year. In 2023 alone, I rejected about 14% of first deliveries. That number isn't a brag. It's a warning. Most suppliers are fine on the basics. They fall apart on the details you didn't write down.
Here's what I check, in order.
Step 1: Lock the Edge and Seam Spec Before You Ask for Samples
The edge finish on a tin container tells you everything about the tooling. A rolled edge that's too tight cracks the coating. Too loose, and it looks unfinished on the shelf. I've seen both from vendors claiming "industry standard."
What to check:
- Roll radius on the lid lip. If it's under 1.5mm, ask for coating adhesion testing.
- Side seam placement. On square cake storage tins, the seam should sit on a corner, not a face.
- Interior solder or weld visibility. If you can see it from inside, neither can your customer—until they open the box.
Write the seam position into the contract. If you don't specify, the factory picks whatever's fastest on their line. I learned that one in Q2 2022, on a run of 8,000 promotional tins where every seam landed dead center on the front panel.
Step 2: Verify Lid Fit on Every Cavity, Not Just One
Lid fit is where most metal storage containers fail in the field. Not in the sample room. In the warehouse, after 6 weeks of stacking.
What I do: request 10 units from different cavities of the same mold. Measure lid retention force on each. If the spread is wider than 15%, the tooling isn't holding tolerance. The vendor will probably tell you it's "within acceptable variance." Push back.
On storage tins with lids, that variance shows up as either lids that pop off in transit or lids your customer needs a spoon handle to pry open. Both get returned.
Step 3: Color Match Under Your Lighting, Not Theirs
Metallic print on tinplate reads differently under fluorescent, daylight, and LED. If you approve color from a supplier photo taken in their QC booth, you're guessing.
Request a physical sample and view it under the lighting where your product will actually be sold or displayed. I've had a "Pantone 186 C" red come back looking orange under warm retail lighting. The vendor was technically correct. The customer wasn't happy.
For metal tin gift boxes, this matters more because the metal substrate reflects light through the print. Matte vs. gloss varnish also shifts perceived color by 5–10%. Specify the finish on the PO, not just in email.
Step 4: Test the Interior Coating Against Your Actual Product
This is the step most buyers skip. I get it—the tin looks fine, the label is beautiful. But if you're putting food products, candles, cosmetics, or anything with oils or acids into a tin container, the interior coating is doing real work.
What I ask for: a compatibility statement for the specific product contact. Not a general "food-safe" claim. If the supplier can't provide migration testing or a written statement, I walk.
In 2023, we had a batch of square cake storage tins where the interior lacquer reacted with a citrus-based product. The coating blistered after 3 weeks in storage. That failure didn't show up in the sample. It showed up in a customer's warehouse.
Step 5: Check Stacking Load and Dents Before You Pay the Deposit
Tinplate dents. It's what it does. The question is how much load it takes and how it deforms when it does.
Ask for a stacking test: fill the container to your intended weight, stack to your warehouse height (I use 8 high for our standard pallets), and leave it for 72 hours. Then inspect.
Look for:
- Corner deformation on square tins (this is where square cake storage tins fail first)
- Lid depression that breaks the seal
- Side panel bowing that affects label adhesion
If the supplier hasn't done this test, they probably don't know their own limits. That's not a supplier you want on a deadline.
Step 6: Match Your Spec Sheet to the Actual Production Run
The sample is not the product. It took me 4 years and roughly 150 orders to really internalize that.
What I do now: I take one unit from the first hour of production, one from the middle, and one from the last hour. I compare them side by side. Any visible difference in fit, finish, or print alignment means the run is drifting.
You don't need to reject the whole run for minor drift. But you do need to document it, because the next run will drift further. Suppliers correct toward what you measure, not what you wrote.
Step 7: Get the Certifications in Writing, With Scope
"Food-grade" and "FDA-compliant" get thrown around loosely. What you want is a certificate that names the specific material and the specific test standard.
For metal storage containers in food contact, look for:
- FDA 21 CFR 175.300 (resinous and polymeric coatings)
- EU Framework Regulation 1935/2004 if you're selling in Europe
- Migration testing reports with actual limits, not just a pass/fail
If a vendor can't produce the documentation in 48 hours, they're either sourcing from a third party they don't fully control, or they're hoping you won't ask.
Common Mistakes (I've Made Most of These)
Approving from photos. Color, texture, and edge quality don't survive a phone camera. Ask for physical samples, shipped.
Not specifying seam position. Default placement puts seams where the factory's tooling favors, not where your design needs.
Assuming "food-safe" covers everything. It doesn't cover oil-based products, acidic products, or long-term storage conditions. Test for your use case, not the generic case.
Skipping the stacking test. If you've never seen a pallet of square tins after a week in a humid warehouse, you don't yet know what you're buying.
When Tin Box Packaging Isn't the Right Choice
I'll be honest: metal tin gift boxes aren't for every application. If you need a fully transparent package, or if your unit weight exceeds what tinplate can hold without denting, you should probably look at rigid boxes or alternative materials.
Tin is excellent for perceived value, reusability, and print quality. It's not excellent for high-drop durability or lightweight shipping. If your product has to survive a 4-foot drop test, tin might not be your best option—and I'd rather say that than sell you something that fails.
For most gift sets, promotional tins, and storage-style packaging, though, the checklist above will get you to a supplier you can actually rely on. The trick is running it every single time, not just when something goes wrong.
