When metal tins are the wrong choice
In my role coordinating rush orders for a packaging supply company, I've handled 400+ expedited jobs in nine years, including same-day turnarounds for e-commerce and promotional-gifting clients. Roughly a third of those involved metal tins — sliding tin cans, spice storage tins, tin gift boxes, and plain tin storage containers.
Here's the pattern I keep seeing: the panic is almost never about the tin itself. It's about a spec that didn't get nailed down until it was too late to fix cheaply. So this is the checklist I walk clients through, in order, when a tin order has to land by a specific date.
Seven steps. If you have three weeks, you can be a little loose with two or three of them. If you have 72 hours, do every one.
The 7-Step Checklist
Step 1: Specify the interior, not the exterior
Metal tins get quoted by outside diameter and outside height. Your product lives on the inside. On a sliding tin can, the lid overlaps the body wall, and that wall has thickness — so a tin sold as "2 oz" may hold 1.6 oz once you account for the cavity, the lid recess, and any liner.
We said "we need the 2 oz tin." The vendor heard "about 2 oz." What arrived held 1.6 oz of actual product with the liner seated. Across 12,000 units, that's a 20% shortfall on fill weight, and it surfaced at the co-packer, not at the printer (ugh).
So write down three numbers: interior diameter, interior depth, usable volume. Ask the vendor to confirm all three in writing. Then measure a production sample with calipers — not a ruler, and not a rendering.
Step 2: Pick the closure before you pick the container
If your tin containers with lids arrive in the wrong closure style, nothing else about the order matters. The common options and what they're actually good for:
- Sliding tin can (two-piece friction fit): best for solid, low-moisture goods; simplest to open and reclose
- Slip lid / deep lid: the classic profile for gift boxes, candles, and confectionery
- Hinged lid: best for anything opened repeatedly; works one-handed
- Window lid: product visibility, but far fewer stock sizes available
The lid is usually the first component to go out of stock at a supplier and the last one to come back. I check lid availability before I even send artwork to a printer. It's a two-minute call that has saved multiple orders.
Step 3: Lock the material and liner spec
Tinplate (electrolytic tinplate, or ETP) is the default. Aluminum shows up for lightweight or corrosion-sensitive jobs. Two factors should drive your spec more than aesthetics:
Food contact. If the contents are acidic — tomato, citrus, vinegar-based blends — uncoated tinplate can react. You want an interior lacquer, and you want the coating spec in writing, not "food safe" on a brochure.
Moisture and aroma. A spice storage tin is doing two jobs at once: keeping moisture out and keeping volatile oils in. Don't assume "airtight." Ask what closure tolerance the vendor actually holds, then test it with your real contents rather than an empty sample.
One flag on marketing language: if you're printing "recyclable" on the label or the tin, the FTC Green Guides (16 CFR Part 260) require that the claim be substantiated, including consumer access to recycling. Steel tins generally qualify, but the claim still needs backing on file.
Step 4: Know where the lead time actually goes
People think the tin is the long-lead item. Usually it isn't. Unprinted stock tins can ship in days. What eats the calendar is decoration and production scheduling.
Direct litho printing on metal requires setup, and setup requires a slot on a press that is already running someone else's job. That's also the real reason rush fees exist — and it is not because the work is harder. Pulling your order forward pushes everyone else's order back. You're paying for disruption, not difficulty.
In March 2024, a client called at 4:40 p.m. on a Thursday needing 8,000 printed sliding tin cans for a trade show opening Monday morning. Normal turnaround was 12 business days. We found a supplier with unprinted 2 oz stock, moved the logo to a pressure-sensitive label instead of litho, paid about $900 in expedite fees on top of the $6,200 order, and shipped Saturday. The client's alternative was a $14,000 booth deposit and an already-announced launch date (thankfully we didn't have to test that one).
The lesson isn't "always use labels." It's knowing which part of the process is the bottleneck before you commit to a date.
Step 5: Run the case-pack math before you ask for pricing
It's tempting to compare metal tins by unit price. But unit price without case pack, weight, and dimensions tells you almost nothing. Ask for:
- Units per inner pack and per master case
- Master case dimensions and gross weight
- Pallet configuration
- Whether the case is built for retail shelf or bulk freight
Two vendors can quote the same tin at the same unit price and one can cost you 25% more in freight because the master case is three inches taller. If you're shipping into a 3PL with storage fees, that difference compounds.
Step 6: Press samples with your product inside — not empty
This is the step I see skipped most often, and it's the one that catches problems. An empty tin that closes smoothly can bind once it's filled and the wall flexes under load. Contents rattle. A liner interferes with the lid seat. Candle wax pulls the lid as it cools.
So press samples on the actual production line — not a 3D render, not a hand sample from a trade show booth — and fill them. Then:
- Open and close each one 20 times
- Drop one from 24 inches onto concrete, on four different corners
- Leave one in a hot car for a day if temperature is part of your supply chain
You're looking for two things: dent behavior and lid retention. A tin that dents is fine. A tin whose lid pops off in transit is not.
Step 7: Fix the transit plan before the boxes leave
Tins dent. That's the whole risk. Metal doesn't absorb impact — it transfers energy straight into the seam.
Three things help: dividers or cells so tins never touch each other, void fill that stays where you put it, and edge protection on the master case if it's moving by parcel.
Also check your shipping class. According to USPS Business Mail 101 (pe.usps.com), a large envelope tops out at 0.75 inches thick. Any tin worth shipping is past that, so it moves as a parcel — which means dimensional weight, which means your packaging choice affects your postage. A taller master case isn't free.
If you're drop-shipping individual tins to consumers, run one mailer end-to-end before your peak season. Not a mock-up — an actual mailer through the actual system (note to self: we should build this into the standard quote).
Things that go wrong — and one that cost us $22,000
Not reserving a production slot. In 2021 we tried to save $600 by taking standard stock instead of paying to reserve a decorated production slot. The client's spice line launched in a competitor's tin. Total contract loss: $22,000. Our policy now requires a 48-hour buffer on any decorated order — and if a client won't accept it, we say so in writing.
Assuming "in stock" means "reserved." Stock listed today can be allocated to someone else tomorrow. Get a written allocation and a ship date, not a verbal estimate.
Deferring the label-vs-litho decision. Decide this in week one. It changes the entire timeline, and it's the most common reason a feasible order becomes an infeasible one.
Ordering the exact unit count with zero overage. Tins arrive dented, printed off-register, or with a stuck lid. Order 3–5% overage on a first run. It's cheaper than paying for a second setup.
Letting a claim go unchecked. FTC advertising guidance requires claims to be truthful, substantiated, and not misleading. Keep vendor spec sheets on file for anything that says "food safe," "recyclable," or "airtight."
When metal tins are the wrong choice
Tins aren't the answer for everything, and I'd rather tell you that before you pay for tooling.
- Low unit cost on a single-use shipper: a folding carton or poly mailer will be a fraction of the price.
- Flexible sizing: stock tins come in a fixed set of dimensions. Custom tooling has an MOQ that usually starts in the tens of thousands.
- Product visibility: a tin hides what's inside. Window lids exist, but stock window sizes are limited.
- Heavy products with thin margins: the tin's weight shows up in freight twice — inbound and outbound.
- Under a week with custom litho: the honest answer is that it probably isn't happening. Labels or plain stock are your realistic options.
Rough numbers from our own 2024 quotes: plain stock 2 oz sliding tins landed between $0.25 and $0.60 per unit at 5,000 pieces, depending on material and supplier. Custom litho at that volume typically ran 30–60% higher once setup was amortized. Pricing is for general reference only — verify current rates, because metal costs moved a lot in 2024.
If your situation matches the first two bullets above, I'd point you somewhere else. That's not a sales problem. It's how you keep a client for nine years.
A last note on order: dimensions before closures, closures before material, material before decoration, decoration before freight. Skip ahead and you'll be re-quoting mid-project — I've done it, and it's an expensive way to learn the sequence.
