Who this checklist is for
If you're shopping for a portable laser engraver — whether it's LaserPecker or any other desktop laser — this is for you. Small business owners, studio operators, education buyers, anyone who doesn't want to spend two months figuring out they bought the wrong thing.
There are 7 checks total. Walking through them takes maybe 30 to 45 minutes. Worth it. I didn't do this the first time, and I paid for that lesson.
The 7 checks before you buy
1. List your materials first, machine second
Most buyers start with the machine. They watch a demo video, see it engrave metal, wood, and leather in 60 seconds, and think "I can do that."
Wrong order. Start with your materials.
Grab a sheet of paper (or a note on your phone) and make three columns: use often, use sometimes, nice to have. Then run each material against the machine before you open your wallet.
A few places people actually get tripped up:
- Leather — yes, you can laser engrave leather. But here's the distinction most people miss: vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) leather engraves beautifully. Chrome-tanned leather releases chlorine gas when cut or engraved. Not great for the operator, not great for the machine. If your supplier can't tell you which is which, figure that out before anything else.
- Concrete — yes, you can laser engrave concrete. But you'll need enough power, and the result is closer to a pale grey scar than a deep carve. Coatings and post-processing change everything. Don't trust uncoated demo shots.
- Stainless, coated metal, and plastics — this depends entirely on the laser technology you're buying. Diode lasers (the blue-light wavelength) can mark some metals but struggle with colored metals like brass, copper, or anodized aluminum. Fiber lasers handle those much better but they're usually heavier and pricier. If 90% of your work is metal, a diode laser might not be your machine regardless of brand.
I always ask vendors for a compatibility matrix against my specific materials. Written, with photos if possible. If they respond with vague promises, that's information.
2. Price your real landed cost — not the sticker
I made the classic mistake of comparing machines on "sticker price" and then being surprised when the total looked nothing like it.
A portable laser engraver — LaserPecker's lineup, for example — runs somewhere in the $400 to $2,000 range as of January 2025, depending on model and configuration. But that's the body only. You're probably adding:
- Rotary attachment (for tumblers, rings, cylindrical objects)
- Air assist (this is not optional for wood cutting — without it, edges char)
- Enclosure or safety glasses
- Spare lenses and mirrors
- Shipping, duties, tax
I don't have hard data on how much the total balloons across the industry, but based on the 30+ machines I've either purchased or helped spec, the landed price usually runs 15% to 40% higher than the sticker.

3. If you're buying through a laser cutting machine distributor, ask three things first
Distributors have advantages: local support, someone you can physically reach, sometimes faster warranty. Cost: usually 10–25% over direct.
For B2B buyers who need real invoicing and PO processing, a distributor is often the only realistic path. Fine.
Three questions to ask before you commit:
- Who handles service issues — you or the manufacturer?
- Do you stock parts locally, or will we wait on imports too?
- What's the warranty process, and can I get it in writing over email?
Here's a dirt-cheap test I use: before buying, send the same after-sales question to both the distributor and the factory direct. Whoever answers faster, and how they answer, tells you a lot. I've done this a dozen times. Response times varied by 5 days between fastest and slowest. That's a real cost if you're on any kind of deadline.
4. Get a sample before you buy — not just the spec sheet
Specs are theoretical. A "40W" diode laser might deliver significantly less effective cutting power once optics, focus, and cooling are accounted for.
Ask the vendor to run a sample on your material. Pay the shipping. If they charge a sample fee, pay it — it's the cheapest money you'll spend on this purchase.
So glad I insisted on a sample for my second machine. The first one's demo shots were perfect on leather. The actual result looked like someone had been practicing with a lighter. If I'd ordered without checking, I'd have been stuck with that unit for months.
If a vendor won't do a sample, especially one saying "no samples before purchase," walk.
5. Factor in the training and software adjustment time
Two things:
- What onboarding is included? (Setup videos that assume competence? A 200-page PDF?)
- Does the machine have a profile for the design software you actually use — LightBurn, Illustrator, or similar?
I got smoked on this with machine #1. I assumed my design software fluency would port over. It didn't. Two or three evenings to learn the basics. A week before I produced something I'd actually sell. Not the machine's fault — the software has its own learning curve.
Estimate 8–12 hours of extra time if you're only factoring the machine price and skipping this part.
6. Honestly ask — is this machine right for you?
The one step most people skip. It has nothing to do with brand preference. It has everything to do with whether to buy at all.
Take your real workload and match it honestly against the machine:
- Are you using it 3 hours a day, or 3 hours a month?
- Is 90% of your work wood, or metal?
- Do you need batch cutting, or one-off engraving?
If your work is mostly metal, high-volume, or primarily cutting thick acrylic — a portable diode laser is not that tool. Looking at a LaserPecker alternative doesn't mean it's "better." It means it might be righter. Those are different things.
Same in reverse. I've seen more than one studio owner buy whatever brand had the loudest marketing, only to discover their actual production needed an entirely different configuration.
Expertise has boundaries. A vendor worth buying from should tell you what they don't do well. If everything is "yes," it probably means nothing is done well.
7. Check the support and consumables path
Buying the machine isn't the finish line. It's the start line.
Before purchase, ask:
- Where do you buy replacement lenses, lenses, belts, and how much do they cost?
- How often do consumables need to be replaced?
- Is there a user community (forum, Discord, etc.)?
- Are software updates free, or paid?
A replacement lens can run anywhere from $30 to $300 depending on type. If the manual doesn't list part numbers, or if parts are only available from one source, you're locked in going forward.
Common mistakes I keep seeing — and keep making
Sorted roughly by frequency:
- Buying off standard specs. Specs are theory. Samples are real.
- Forgetting hidden costs. Air assist, rotary, shipping, none of these are small.
- Underestimating the learning curve. Easy to run. Different story to produce sellable output.
- Buying because it's cheapest right now. Price matters. It's just not first.
- Not asking whether it fits the actual business. The best machine is wrong for the wrong job.
That's it. Run through all seven and you'll avoid most of the mistakes I didn't.
