Choose a Mazak industrial laser/CNC if: you cut metal for production, you need repeatability and integration, you have the power and floor space, and you can keep utilization high. Buy from a dealer with service records. Get a laser safety review. According to OSHA (osha.gov), industrial laser safety depends on class and enclosure; don't skip that step.
Choose an entry-level wood and metal engraving machine if: you make signs, gifts, prototypes, or mixed-material art. Free laser engraving templates and laser cutting images can get you started. You don't need 3-phase power. You don't need a $100,000 machine to learn.
Hybrid shops: buy both. A Mazak machine CNC for metal production, and a small CO2 or diode machine for wood and acrylic. I've seen this work better than forcing one machine to do everything.
Bottom line: the cheapest machine is the one that fits the job. The most expensive mistake is buying the wrong category.
