Loctite 5452, Loctite 620 Retaining Compound, or Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker? A 6-Step Checklist

Who This Checklist Is For

I’m the quality/compliance manager at a packaging and printing company. I review roughly 200 jobs a month before they are released to customers—printed cartons, flexible packaging, point-of-purchase displays. Maybe 180; I’d have to check the system. In Q1 2024, about 6% of our first-article samples failed because someone picked an adhesive by memory instead of by specification.

When I first started this role, I thought all Loctite products with a high-strength number were more or less interchangeable. I changed my mind after a $22,000 redo. A maintenance operator had used a flange gasket sealant to retain a loose bearing journal. The sealant did what gasket sealants do—it stayed flexible. The bearing kept spinning. Now I walk every proposed adhesive purchase through a six-step checklist.

Step 1: Name the Failure Mode, Not the Product

Before you search a product number, answer this: What is failing? If two cylindrical parts should be locked together, that’s a retaining job. If two flat faces are leaking, that’s a sealing job. If a panel or poster must stick to another panel, that’s a bonding or mounting job.

It matters because product families are optimized for failure modes. Loctite 620 retaining compound is not a gasket maker replacement. Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker is not a thread sealant. If you force a flexible silicone flange sealer into a retaining job, no amount of torque or clamping will fix the chemistry.

We see the same confusion in purchasing. A spec that reads Loctite 5452 might be a package-code version of Loctite 545, which is a thread sealant for hydraulic and pneumatic fittings—not a retaining compound and not a flange sealant. The first quality check is to confirm the failure mode before you confirm the part number.

Step 2: Check Both Substrates

Once the failure mode is clear, identify what is actually touching the product. Loctite 620 retaining compound works best in close-fitting metal-to-metal cylindrical assemblies. If the shaft is stainless steel, plated, or otherwise passive, it may need a primer. If you are bonding plastic, EPS foam board, paper, or painted board, 620 is probably the wrong family entirely.

A recent display in our own office showed the principle. Marketing printed a Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 3 poster and mounted it to foam board. Someone proposed a general-purpose solvent spray adhesive because it was strong. The solvent melted the EPS foam core under the paper. By lunch it looked like a failed vacuum-forming. The adhesive wasn’t weak. The substrate check was missing.

So when you ask how to hang foam board from the ceiling, the first rule is not “which adhesive is strongest?” The first rule is “what is the weakest layer?” Usually it’s the foam, not the adhesive. That should drive your selection of foam-safe mounting tape, display hangers, or product-specific adhesive.

Step 3: Match the Product Family

Now you can select. The three products people ask me about most are grouped together in search results, but they are not interchangeable.

Loctite 620 Retaining Compound

Pick this when a cylindrical metal component must stay locked in a bore or on a shaft—for example, a bearing outer race in a gear housing, a bushing in a conveyor roller, or a gear on a motor shaft. Loctite 620 retaining compound is a high-strength, high-temperature anaerobic formula. It cures in the small clearance between assembled parts after air is excluded. At our plant, it is the product we reach for when replacing a shaft would cost more than a tube.

The phrase I underline on the spec is close fitting. If the clearance is too large, the compound won’t cure properly. Do not use 620 to fill a sloppy fit. Change the fit, or change to a product approved for a larger gap.

Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker

Pick this when you are sealing two flat, machined faces—and when the joint will move, expand, or vibrate. Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker is a flexible flange sealant that handles thermal cycling better than a brittle paper or cork gasket. This is a sealing job, not a retaining or structural bonding job. It fills gaps and absorbs movement. It does not carry heavy structural loads and should not be asked to hold a bearing or keep a ceiling panel in place.

Loctite 5452: Confirm the Code

Here is a quality control detail people skip. In distributor listings, the string ‘Loctite 5452’ can appear as a package-code version of Loctite 545 in a 2-ounce container or a two-pack. Loctite 545 is the actual formula name—a thread sealant for metal hydraulic and pneumatic fittings. It seals and prevents loosening on threaded connections; it is not a retaining compound and not a gasket maker.

If a drawing in your building says 5452, do not guess from memory. Ask the engineer for the formula and the current technical data sheet. Record both in your system. That one habit stops most wrong-product purchase orders before they reach the shelf.

Step 4: Prepare the Surface

I have never approved a high-strength bond that failed because it was too clean. The opposite happens daily. Grease, mold release, machining oil, and even fingerprint oil can stop an anaerobic cure or ruin a silicone sealant’s adhesion.

Degrease both metal surfaces before applying Loctite 620. For passive metals such as stainless steel, plated, or anodized surfaces, Loctite 7649 primer is usually specified; check the current TDS for your material and temperature. Clean the structure you are mounting to as well, whether that is a flange face, a ceiling frame, or a foam board display hanger. Your substrate is not just the part in your hand.

Step 5: Apply to the Gap, Not Just Around It

Loctite 620 retaining compound should be applied so it wets the whole annular joint. The practical method we use: apply the product to the shaft, insert the bushing or bearing, and rotate it slightly to distribute the film. If you pour into a blind hole and press a shaft in, hydraulic pressure can push the compound out or stop the part from seating.

For Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker, run a continuous bead on one flange face and assemble within the working time listed on the data sheet. The bead belongs on the sealing surface, not squeezed out of the joint and wiped back in.

For a foam board sign, the same logic says: do not spread adhesive over the whole sheet if gravity is the load and the ceiling is the substrate. Mount a hanger or hook to the ceiling structure, then attach the foam board with display hardware. That keeps the weak foam from carrying the whole assembly on one tape strip. Full cure time is not “when it feels dry.” Anaerobic products need confinement and contact. Many take hours to reach functional strength and up to 24 hours to reach maximum chemical resistance. I ask our maintenance team to schedule the job so full cure is possible, then do three things:

  • Check squeeze-out and bead shape.
  • Perform a pull, torque, or leak test on a representative sample.
  • Write down the product lot number, primer lot number, date, and installer.

The last check matters more than people think. If a customer calls six months later with a leak or a loose bearing, traceability is what turns a mystery into a root cause.

Traceability also applies to label claims. Per FTC Green Guides (ftc.gov/green-guides), an environmental claim such as recyclable must be substantiated for the whole assembly. The adhesive can be a high-quality Loctite product, but if it prevents a printed package from being recycled, the claim needs to say so. That is part of my inspection, too.

Common Mistakes I Still Find in the Field

Color and Number Confusion

Do not select a Loctite product by color alone. Green anaerobic products are not all Loctite 620. The code 5452 should not be ordered by memory. The label, the controlled drawing, and the current technical data sheet win over what someone used last time.

Cool Duct Tape Ideas Have a Place—but Not as a Specification

I don’t want to ban duct tape. It is fast, cheap, and genuinely useful for bundling cables, color-coding incoming material, masking large areas before cutting or painting, protecting edges during transport, and making temporary hinges on cartons. Those are cool duct tape ideas that do not pretend to be permanent engineering.

But duct tape creeps under load. Its adhesive softens in heat, its plastic backing relaxes, and UV breaks it down. If you need the high-temperature strength of Loctite 620 retaining compound or the flexible sealing life of Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker, duct tape is the wrong tool. Use it for what it is good at, and label removal dates when it is doing a temporary job.

The Foam Board and Poster Trap

A poster on foam board is not a harsh industrial application, but it still deserves a specification. If a client brings in a Star Trek Strange New Worlds season 3 poster and wants it on foam board for display, don’t lay down a heavy solvent adhesive on EPS core. Use a foam-safe adhesive or mounting tape, or print directly onto a rigid board that suits the adhesive.

And if the sign has to hang from a ceiling, remember the ceiling is part of the joint. Use hangers rated for the total weight, spread the load across the board, and do not hang from acoustic ceiling tile alone. A T-grid clip or a hook anchored to the structure will outlast any tape that was never designed for permanent overhead holding.

The Checklist Is the Product

The adhesive industry in 2025 looks different from how it looked ten years ago. Some old best practices are outdated, and the execution has changed. But the fundamentals have not: clean surfaces, correct fit, correct product family, and documented cure. Loctite 5452, Loctite 545, Loctite 620 retaining compound, and Loctite High Flex Gasket Maker all have specifications for a reason. When I approve a job, I am not approving a brand or a color. I am approving a spec that was verified before the tube was opened.
