If you just unboxed a fiber laser engraver—or you're moving from a CO2 setup to fiber—this checklist is for you. Same if you're running an engraving machine UK-wide and you're tired of scrapping material because you missed one setting.

Step 2: Open Your File and Ask "What's the Worst That Happens?"
Before anything touches the machine, review your design. Wrong units? Wrong orientation? Mirrored text? It happens more than you'd think.
I once sent a file to the engraver with dimensions in inches instead of millimeters. The software defaulted to mm. What should have been a 50mm logo came out at 50 inches—or at least it tried to before the machine hit its travel limit and threw an error. No material wasted that time. Your check: Confirm units, orientation, and origin point in your design file. Then confirm them again in the machine software.
Step 3: Check Your Focus—Every Single Time
This is the one most people skip. "It was fine yesterday." Yeah, it was. Then someone bumped the lens housing, or the material thickness changed by half a millimeter, and now your line width is 40% wider than spec.

If your machine doesn't have a repeatable origin function, mark your workpiece and your bed with alignment marks before the first pass. I learned this the hard way when a re-run was offset by 1.5mm. Your check: Establish origin, mark it physically, and test your repeatability before committing to the full job.
Step 6: Run Air Assist and Exhaust Checks
Air assist keeps your lens clean and blows debris away from the cut. If it's clogged or off, you'll get inconsistent engraving depth and a dirty lens.
I once ran a two-hour engraving job only to find the air assist line had been disconnected. The lens was coated in residue. Cleaning it took another hour. If I'd damaged the lens, that would've been a $300 replacement plus downtime.
Your check: Confirm air assist is on, the nozzle is clear, and exhaust is pulling air. Do this before every job, not just at the start of the day.
Step 7: Do a Test Cut on Scrap—Yes, Even If You're in a Hurry
This is where people argue. "I've done this a thousand times." Great. Do it a thousand and one times.
There's a reason I keep a bin of scrap material next to the machine. Test cuts catch things that digital previews miss: actual power output, actual speed, actual result on that specific material batch.

Without that test, we'd have engraved all 250 before noticing. That would've been a full redo. Instead, we adjusted and finished on time.

Step 8: Log Your Parameters (Actually Write Them Down)
If you don't log your settings, you're starting from zero every time. And you'll waste more material than you save by "not having time."
I keep a spreadsheet: material type, thickness, power, speed, frequency, focus offset, and result notes. It's not fancy. But it's saved us from re-testing the same combinations over and over.
Your check: Log every successful job. Log every failure too—that's the data that prevents repeats.
Step 9: The Five-Second "Stupid Check"
Before you hit start, take five seconds and look at the machine. Not the screen. The machine.
- Is the right file loaded?
- Is the material the right piece?
- Is the lid closed?
- Is anyone standing in the beam path?
I skipped this once. Sent a file for a decorative engraving instead of the functional marking job. Same client, same material, different design. Caught it 15 seconds into the run. $80 in material wasted. Could've been $800 if it had been a full production run.
Common Mistakes That Cost Real Money

- Trusting the material label. Always test. Suppliers make mistakes, and so do their suppliers.
- Assuming "same as last time" means "same as last time." Material batches change. Machine behavior changes. Check anyway.
- Skipping the test cut to save time. You'll spend far more time fixing the mistake.
- Not having a scrap bin. If you don't have scrap to test on, you're testing on production material. That's expensive.
- Rushing the setup. I get it—deadlines are real. But in my experience, rushing the setup is what causes the missed deadline in the first place.
