Duck Prints, Black Duck Tape & the 85x55mm Business Card: FAQs From a Print Pro
For the past eight years, I’ve handled custom printing and packaging orders. I’ve also made and documented more than a dozen expensive mistakes—by my rough count, the reprints and rush fees have totaled around $9,000. The root cause was usually the same: I assumed instead of checking.
This article is a short FAQ for the search mix-ups I keep seeing. One of the questions involves donuts. I’ll answer that too.
What Are “Duck Prints”?
In a print shop, “duck prints” usually means one of three things: a custom print with a duck design or logo, custom-printed cotton duck canvas, or printed duck tape and packaging items. The product matters more than the pattern.
Why does this matter? Because “duck prints” does not tell production what to make. A customer once asked for “duck prints,” and I quoted them a poster-sized art print. They needed die-cut labels for water bottles. We caught it before production, but I lost half a day to the wrong mockup. Now I ask two questions first: What is the product, and where will it be used?
If you’re ordering prints, include the finished size and a print-ready file. Photographic artwork should be around 300 DPI at final size for commercial print. Large-format posters viewed from a distance can sometimes get away with 150 DPI. If your brand color has to match, give the printer a Pantone reference; a Delta E under 2 is the usual target for color-critical work.
Is Black Duck Tape the Right Tape for Everything?
Black duck tape is, in most cases, black duct tape: cloth-backed, rubber-based adhesive, made to be torn by hand and pressed down quickly. It works well for bundling, staging, cable management, and temporary repairs. It is not the right tool for every surface.
In September 2022, I used it to hold up a banner on a painted rental wall. The banner stayed up all day. Taking it down pulled paint off the wall, and the rental company charged me $480. The tape didn’t fail. The material choice did. For painted walls, use a removable tape or gaffer tape. If the surface could be damaged, test a patch before you rely on black duck tape for a full install.
European Business Card Size 85 x 55 mm Standard—Yes, But Check the Template
The most common European business card size is 85 x 55 mm, which works out to about 3.35 by 2.17 inches. It is widely treated as the standard for cards in Europe, though it isn’t an official paper-size standard like A4. In the US and Canada, the usual card size is 3.5 by 2 inches—roughly 89 by 51 mm.
That 4 mm height difference may look small on screen, but it creates a card that doesn’t line up with European holders. I learned this by sending a file built at the US size to a German customer who asked for “standard European cards.” They got a card that was the wrong aspect ratio, and the reply email was not friendly.
For an 85 x 55 mm card, build the file at exact final size, include at least 3 mm bleed on every side, and keep important text at least 5 mm from the trim edge. If your printer provides a template, use it. That’s not a suggestion; it’s the lesson from that reprint invoice.
How Big Is a 32 oz Water Bottle?
A 32 oz water bottle holds 32 US fluid ounces, which is about 946 ml or one quart. If you’re tracking a gallon a day, four of those bottles equals a gallon.
Physical dimensions are harder to state because “32 oz” tells you capacity, not shape. A typical straight-sided 32 oz bottle is roughly 9 to 10 inches tall and 3 to 3.5 inches in diameter, not including the cap. Insulated stainless bottles are often shorter and wider. Tall slim bottles run closer to 10 inches with a smaller diameter.
If you’re ordering printed labels, don’t give the printer only bottle capacity. Give them the exact bottle model, the label height, label width, and any curves or panels. I’ve rejected proofs where someone told me “it’s a 32 oz bottle” and expected that to mean one standard shape. It doesn’t.
What Is the Poster Dress Trend?
The poster dress trend has two versions: a real garment printed with poster-style graphics, and a viral photo trick where a person holds a large printed poster of a dress in front of themselves so it looks like they’re wearing it. Both are printing challenges, just on different materials.
For a real wearable dress, poster paper is a poor idea. It wrinkles, tears at the seams, and does not move like fabric. If you’re doing the photo version, a rigid poster can work, but large-format printing on Tyvek or printable fabric gives better drape for anything more than a staged shot. In DIY videos, black duck tape often appears as a seam reinforcement. It can hold a costume together in an emergency, but tape is not a substitute for material selection.
