Let me start with a caveat: I'm an office administrator, not a laser engineer. I manage purchasing and vendor relations for a 25-person product design studio, which means about $80,000 a year across printing, materials, and fabrication supplies, and I report to both operations and finance. Why I compared these two at all
A desktop CO2 laser and a diode-based Creality Falcon engraver compete for the same budget line in a small business, even if the spec sheets say they are different categories. So I compared the non-glossy list:

- Setup, cleanup, and supervision time
- Training and software curve
- Vendor behavior with a small order
That list is why this comparison won't end with one absolute winner. It ends with a decision tree.
Dimension 1: A desktop CO2 is not just a bigger purchase order
The first desktop CO2 quote I received looked reasonable. Too reasonable, honestly. Then I asked about water cooling, exhaust, air assist, spare consumables, and delivery. The add-on list was long. I don't have hard data on what every CO2 brand requires, but based on the three quotes I collected in January 2025, the extras were enough to change the approval level inside our company.
The Creality Falcon engraver route was simpler. It doesn't have the same cutting capability, so I'm not calling it a replacement. But as a purchasing decision, it required less engineering support. Our facilities person had it running in an afternoon. It still needs ventilation and fire supervision—any laser does—but we didn't need a chiller or major workshop modifications.
Small buyers should pay attention to this part. A machine that needs a maintenance plan is not a bargain when the company using it doesn't have dedicated maintenance staff.
Dimension 2: Clear acrylic changed the comparison
Our studio makes product mockups and display samples. Many of those need clear acrylic. A desktop CO2 handled clear acrylic the way the design team expected. The Creality Falcon handled plywood, dark acrylic, and coated metal blanks well enough for a small shop, but for transparent acrylic, the CO2 was the right tool.
I'm not sure why I expected one machine to do everything. My best guess is that marketing makes every laser look universal. That is the gap between a comparison chart and a workshop.
Dimension conclusion: If clear acrylic is part of your normal product line, a desktop CO2 is hard to replace. If it is an occasional job, paying for CO2 capacity can be overkill.

Before we tested anything, I searched for laser engraving training courses. Many are genuinely useful. But the most valuable training was not a generic course. It was a one-hour, machine-specific walkthrough with the vendor. I wish I had negotiated that training before signing the purchase order.
Our studio already knew Creality from running an Ender 3 v2 for small 3D printed parts. Let me say this plainly: knowing the Creality Ender 3 v2 software doesn't make you a laser operator. It did mean we were comfortable with Creality's documentation and community. The Falcon software was new, but not alien.
Looking back, I should have made operator training a condition of sale for the CO2 option. At the time, I thought training was something we could add later. It is much easier to add before you sign.
Dimension conclusion: The real difference is not CO2 versus diode. It is supported workflow versus unsupported workflow.
Dimension 4: The 'fastest laser engraver' title was not the bottleneck
Sales sheets love to say fastest laser engraver, as if speed alone determines throughput. I didn't track every job with a stopwatch, and I wish I had. What I can say anecdotally is that the bottleneck in our shop was not laser head speed. It was setup, safety checks, material prep, and cleanup.
The desktop CO2 cut many materials in fewer passes than the Falcon. That advantage became real when we had a queue of identical acrylic pieces. But for one-off prototypes and mixed material orders, the machine that was faster to set up got more use.
Dimension conclusion: If you're choosing a laser engraver, define fast as jobs per day, not millimeters per minute.
Dimension 5: Support for a small order is a preview of after-sale support
When I took over purchasing in 2020, I learned to notice which vendors disappear when they hear that the order will be for one machine. The most frustrating part of this search was how predictable that pattern became. You would think a written specification list would be enough, but support quality still varies wildly.
Some suppliers stopped replying after they heard one unit. The one who spent time explaining enclosure and ventilation options earned our trust. Creality, in our experience, answered questions about the Falcon engraver software and setup clearly.
I do not expect suppliers to lose money on support. I do expect them to be honest about what a small order includes. When I was a newer buyer, the vendors who treated our smaller orders seriously are the ones we still call for larger projects. Small doesn't mean unimportant. It means the relationship is early.
Bottom line: Best desktop CO2 laser or Creality Falcon engraver?
Everyone wants a straight answer, so here is mine. If your regular work includes clear or light-colored acrylic, batch cutting, and a workshop that can handle ventilation and consumables, buy a desktop CO2. Do not buy the cheapest one. Buy the one from a vendor who offers training and support, and budget for accessories before you promise a delivery date.
If your material list is wood, plywood, leather, dark acrylic, painted or anodized metal, and you need a smaller footprint with flexible jobs, the Creality Falcon engraver is the more practical daily tool. It didn't win every material test in our shop, but it won the workflow test for a small team with varied orders.
At the end of the January 2025 comparison, our team still uses the Falcon as the everyday engraver, and we did not order a desktop CO2. Our clear acrylic volume did not justify the support overhead. If that changes, I now know the right questions: real total cost, a live material test, training before delivery, and support after the sale. That is more useful than the fastest laser engraver title or a list of marketing specs.
