Do not buy on generic claims.
- If you are running a customization shop: do not buy a clinical Cutera system for production. Choose a laser etcher that fits your material mix. For cups, confirm the machine can handle cylindrical objects with a rotary attachment. For aluminum, ask for fiber or MOPA configurations and run test cuts. For wood, start with hard maple or birch plywood.
- If you are responsible for both, keep them in separate procurement categories. They are not the same budget, the same service schedule, or the same vendor review.
Trust me on this one: the buyer's job is not to find the best laser overall. It is to find the right laser for a specific target. What made sense in 2020—treating all lasers as one equipment class—does not hold up in 2025. The fundamentals of safety and material targeting have not changed, but supplier qualification and documentation are now deal-breakers. If a distributor like Cutera-Laser can separate the clinical quote from the industrial quote, great. If they cannot explain which system is appropriate for the job, keep looking.
