Brother MFC-L2710DW Offline? Check This Before You Reinstall the Driver

When Windows says “printer offline Brother”, the fix is usually not a driver reinstall. I’ve logged more than 300 Brother offline tickets over the past five years—mostly on the Brother MFC-L2710DW and HL-L2350DW—and the most common cause is a stale Windows port. The computer is sending jobs to an old IP address or a WSD port that no longer matches the printer. That fix usually takes about 10 minutes.

I’m not a network engineer. I’m the person who became “printer support” by default, and I keep a log now because I made expensive mistakes when I didn’t. In 2022, I wasted half a day reinstalling the Brother driver on an MFC-L2710DW that had simply picked up a new IP address after a router reset. I should have checked that first. That mistake turned into the checklist I use for every “printer offline Brother” report.

Everything I’d read about Brother offline errors said the reliable fix was Brother’s repair tool or a full driver reinstall. In practice, I found the opposite. A driver can be perfectly fine and still lose the printer because it’s pointing at a ghost address. Reinstalling is like putting a new stamp on a letter that’s already addressed to the wrong house.

Step 1: Confirm what the printer thinks its network address is

Before you change anything in Windows, print a network configuration page from the Brother printer itself. On the MFC-L2710DW, the menu path changes by firmware version, so don’t panic if you don’t see the exact option I name. Look under Network or Print Reports, then choose Network Config. The important block shows the IPv4 address.

If the printer reports 169.254.x.x, it is not truly connected to your WiFi. That happens more often than people expect after a Brother HL-L2350DW WiFi setup—the setup says it connected, but the printer joined the wrong SSID or lost the connection before you closed the installer.

Step 2: Look at the Windows port before you uninstall anything

Open Devices and Printers, right-click the Brother MFC-L2710DW icon, choose Printer properties, and open the Ports tab. Look at the port with the check mark. If it says WSD-xxxx, or if the IP address is different from the one on the network configuration page, that’s the problem.

WSD is a convenience feature, not a reliable long-term setup for a printer that sleeps. When Windows needs to wake the Brother MFC-L2710DW, a WSD port often waits for the printer to announce itself. If the announcement doesn’t come, Windows marks the printer offline. A Standard TCP/IP port is more direct: it sends the job to a specific address.

Add a Standard TCP/IP port with the printer’s current IP address, select it, and try a test page. This one step cleared most of the offline Brother reports I’ve documented.

This also applies to a Brother HL-L2350DW WiFi setup that seemed fine. The Brother installer often creates a WSD port, which can work for a while and then break when the printer enters deep sleep or the network connection profile changes. I’ve seen a machine show a connected WiFi signal all day and still hold jobs because Windows was talking to a ghost port.

After you correct the port, reserve the printer’s IP address in your router if you can. A reserved IP prevents the offline error from returning when the printer’s DHCP lease expires. Without this step, the fix can be temporary.

I first recognized this pattern in a school office where three jobs sat in the queue: a newsletter built from a page called “school flyer templates free download,” a silent-auction poster for a Radio Flyer Tesla ride-on, and a nutrition worksheet that asked “how many cups of water is one water bottle?” The files had nothing in common, but the problem did. Once I pointed Windows to the current IP, all three jobs printed without reopening anything.

What to do if the port already looks correct

If the port is fine, I check three things before touching the driver:

  1. Wake the printer out of deep sleep. A sleeping Brother can look offline to Windows even when its screen shows a clock. Press the power button once, wait a few seconds, and send the job again.
  2. Ping the printer. Open Command Prompt and run ping <printer-ip>. If the printer answers, the network path is fine. If it doesn’t, check the WiFi connection or access point before blaming the driver.
  3. Check for “Use Printer Offline” in the queue. Open the printer queue, click Printer, and see if that option has a check mark. If it does, uncheck it. I accidentally turned it on once while trying to pause a stuck job.

Power management is the hidden variable. I’ve seen Brother HL-L2350DW units enter deep sleep so quickly that the first ping fails, the printer wakes, and the second ping succeeds. That’s why I ping twice: once to wake it, once to check. If you want to reduce this behavior, extend the Deep Sleep timer in the printer’s menu if the model allows it.

When I stop telling people to check the port

I don’t want to oversell this. If the Brother printer’s own network page shows 169.254.x.x or a blank IP, this isn’t a Windows port problem. The printer isn’t on your network. Check the WiFi credentials, the band, and the signal before anything else.

And if you’ve corrected the port, reserved the IP, and the error still comes back, the next step is Brother support or a local technician. This gets into router-level troubleshooting that isn’t my expertise. At least, that’s been my experience with standard WiFi setups; managed enterprise networks with VLANs and certificates are a different world.
