ABB Contactor FAQ: AF09-30-10-13, 24V Coils, and Motor Starter Basics

I'm a technical support specialist at an electrical distributor. Motor Starter vs Contactor: What is the Difference?

Short answer: a contactor is a switch, and a motor starter is a switch plus overload protection. A contactor can close and open a power circuit, but it has no idea if the motor is drawing too much current. A motor starter is an assembly that includes a contactor, an overload relay, and often a disconnecting means. The overload relay watches motor current and drops the holding circuit if the motor stays overloaded.

What I mean is that the words are not interchangeable in a parts order. In an ABB catalog, the AF09-30-10-13 is a contactor. To turn it into a starter, you add an overload relay that is separately catalogued and sized to the motor full-load current. If you connect a contactor directly to a motor without overload protection, you have a switching problem waiting to happen. NFPA 70 (NEC) Article 430 requires overload protection for motors, and IEC 60947-4-1 covers both contactors and motor starters.

The most frustrating part of this topic is that online listings call almost anything a starter. You'd think a contactor with overload relay would be labeled clearly, but it's not always. Check the part number and the wiring diagram before you write it on a panel schedule.

What Does the ABB AF09-30-10-13 Contactor Number Mean?

The ABB AF09-30-10-13 is one of the most common small IEC contactors I sell. The part number looks like alphabet soup, but it decodes like this:

  • AF: ABB AF contactor family with an electronic coil interface
  • 09: frame size and rated operational current, 9 A in AC-3 (the IEC duty rating for starting and stopping squirrel-cage motors) at 400 V; that's roughly 4 kW
  • 30: three main poles, normally open
  • 10: one built-in auxiliary contact, normally open, with zero normally closed contacts
  • 13: coil voltage code; for this model it means 24-60 V AC/DC

So an ABB AF09-30-10-13 contactor is a 9A, 3-pole contactor with one auxiliary contact and a 24-60 V AC/DC coil. It is not a motor starter by itself. The -13 coil code matters more than people think. Back in March 2024, a customer read me a part number from a half-worn label as AF09-30-10-1? We had to check the coil before shipping because the difference between 24V and 110V meant another night of downtime.

Can I Use a 24 Volt Coil Contactor with a PLC Output?

Yes, but check two things: the coil type and the PLC output rating.

A 24V coil can be AC or DC. A conventional 24V AC coil draws a high inrush current for the first few cycles. A 24V DC coil is more predictable, but it is still inductive. When a DC coil turns off, the collapsing magnetic field can produce a voltage spike that damages a transistor output unless there is a flyback diode or a surge suppressor across the coil. Many PLC transistor outputs can switch a small DC contactor coil directly if the coil current is within the output rating, but the suppressor is not optional in my book. If the coil current is higher than the PLC output rating, use an interposing relay instead.

The ABB AF09-30-10-13 works well in 24V control systems because the AF electronic coil accepts 24-60 V AC/DC and draws very low current when held in. According to ABB's published contactor data, the AF coil interface also tolerates voltage variations better than a standard electromagnet coil. That makes it useful for emergency replacements where the control voltage may not be perfectly stable. At 24V, a 2V drop is almost 10% of the coil rating, so long wire runs deserve more attention than they get. Still, check the datasheet for pick-up voltage, hold-in voltage, and coil current. The surprise is rarely that the contactor itself failed; it's that the failure took the PLC output with it.

What Is an ABB Lighting Contactor?

An ABB lighting contactor is a contactor selected for switching lighting circuits instead of motor loads. The difference is in the rating and the coil configuration. Lighting circuits can have high inrush current, especially LED drivers and fluorescent ballasts, so a lighting contactor needs to handle the full bank of lamps without contact bounce or welded contacts.

When someone searches for an ABB lighting contactor, they often need a DIN-rail contactor or an enclosed contactor that matches a lighting panel's control voltage. The ABB product range includes contactors with 24V coils and auxiliary contact blocks for this kind of use. If you're replacing one, take a photo of the coil label and the contactor markings before calling. The coil voltage and the number of poles are the two things I can't guess from a photo of the front cover.

Is a Packard Contactor a Good Replacement for an ABB Contactor?

I get this question because Packard contactors are common on HVAC supply house shelves. Packard makes compact 2-pole and 3-pole contactors, often with 24V coils, for air conditioning equipment. They're not bad products in that application. But a good replacement depends on what you are replacing.

An ABB contactor has published AC-1 and AC-3 ratings, terminal torque specs, coil data, and tested combinations with ABB overload relays. A replacement contactor from any brand may or may not carry the same level of documentation. For a residential condensing unit, the data requirement is small. For an industrial control panel that needs a documented, listed assembly, I'd rather use the contactor specified on the original drawing.

Look, I'm not going to tell you that every cheaper contactor will fail. I'm telling you that the cost of a contactor is small compared to the cost of a night shift waiting for a missing rating. After seeing three 'will work' replacements cause extra downtime, my default policy is: if the original spec is known, match it exactly.

Should I Choose an ABB A-Line or AF-Line Contactor?

If you're already ordering ABB, the biggest decision is usually A-line vs AF-line.

A-line contactors use a conventional electromagnetic coil. You select the coil voltage (24V, 120V, 230V, etc.) and replace the coil as a separate part if it fails. They are simple and often less expensive. If the application is fixed and the control voltage is known, A-line is fine.

AF-line contactors use an electronic coil interface. The AF09-30-10-13 accepts 24-60 V AC/DC on the same coil terminals, and other AF models cover higher ranges. The electronic interface reduces inrush current, holds the contactor in with lower power, and gives more stable pickup during voltage dips. That flexibility is useful in emergency work because one part can cover a wide range of control voltages.

It took me about five years and more burned coils than I want to count to understand that voltage tolerance is not a luxury; it's a reliability feature. If you're building a panel that might be modified in the field, AF-line saves you from a very common mistake.

How Much Does Contactor Quality Matter?

It matters more than the unit price suggests. A contactor is not visible to the end customer, but its failure is. When a contactor welds closed at 2 AM, the customer's opinion of your work changes fast. The $30 difference between a borderline contactor and a properly specified ABB contactor is small compared to an overtime service call.

I'm not saying every project needs the most expensive option. I am saying that the component quality inside a panel becomes part of your brand. A panel with clearly labeled contactors, rated wire, and a diagram is easier for the next maintenance person to trust. That level of detail is what makes a customer call you again after the job is done.

After 11 years in this business, I've come to believe that quality is not about the logo on the contactor. It's about the certainty you can deliver when the schedule is tight and the deadline can't move.
