ABB Contactor FAQ: 6 Questions I Answer When You Need It Fast

When a motor won't start and the production schedule is on the line, you don't need a 5,000-word white paper. You need answers, and you need them now. 1. What's the difference between a contactor and a relay?

Both are electrically operated switches. The difference is what they're built to switch.

A contactor handles power circuits. It switches motor loads, heating elements, capacitor banks—things that draw serious current. Motors are the demanding case: they pull several times their full-load current on startup, and interrupting that current is violent work. That's why contactors have arc chutes, heavier contact materials, and ratings defined by utilization categories like AC-3 under IEC 60947-4-1. A typical contactor starts at around 9A and goes up past hundreds of amps.

A relay handles control circuits. It switches a PLC output, a signal lamp, or maybe the coil of the contactor itself. Most relays top out well below 10A, and few are built to break the sort of inductive load a motor represents. If you use a relay where you need a contactor, you'll be replacing it soon.

Here's the thing: the relay picks the function, the contactor does the heavy lifting. In most panels, you need both.

2. How do I choose the right ABB contactor coil voltage?

Match it to the control circuit that feeds it. That sounds kinda obvious, but it's the #1 mistake I see on emergency orders.

ABB contactors come in two coil families. Standard models use a conventional AC coil with a fixed voltage—24V AC/DC, 120V AC, 240V AC, that sort of thing. The AF range uses an electronic coil that accepts a wide voltage band: a single AF16 coil, for example, might take 24–60V AC/DC or 100–250V AC/DC depending on the version. That breadth matters when control voltages aren't what you assumed.

In my first year, I made the classic rookie mistake: matched the contactor to the motor current and ignored the coil voltage until the part arrived. The contactor was correct. The coil was wrong. That's a $15 error that cost $85 in overnight freight and an unplanned night visit.

Now I push everyone to measure before ordering. I once had a client swear his panel was 120V because "it's always been 120V." It wasn't—the control transformer had been swapped and the prints never updated. A 30-second check with a multimeter caught it.

If you're replacing an existing unit, read the coil code on the old nameplate before you call. It saves everyone a round trip.

3. Is the ABB AF16 contactor worth the extra cost?

The AF16 is a 16A contactor (AC-3 rating up to 7.5kW at 400V) with ABB's electronic coil interface. It's often my first recommendation for urgent replacements, and the reason is the coil.

A standard contactor's coil is fixed at one voltage. The AF16 accepts a wide AC/DC range on a single coil, which means one part number covers multiple control voltages. The price premium is roughly $20–30 over an equivalent standard contactor at typical distributor pricing as of late 2024—verify current pricing, because it moves. In return, you get lower coil power consumption, no coil hum, and better behavior during voltage dips.

For me, the real argument is inventory simplification. One AF16 package can replace five coil variants in a plant with mixed control systems. That's fewer shelf positions, fewer wrong parts, and a much better chance the replacement you're holding is the right one.

Is it always worth it? No. If your entire facility runs on a stable, single 120V control supply, a standard contactor does the job at a lower price. But when you're not sure what tomorrow's line will bring, the AF range buys flexibility.

4. Can I replace an Allen-Bradley C37 contactor with an ABB contactor?

Electrically, usually yes. Mechanical drop-in, not necessarily. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise without looking at the actual unit.

The Allen-Bradley C37 is a definite-purpose contactor commonly found in HVAC and refrigeration equipment. To cross it to an ABB model, compare four things: the full-load current and horsepower rating at your voltage, the coil voltage, the mounting dimensions, and the auxiliary contacts your circuit requires.

It's tempting to think matching current and coil voltage is enough. That's the oversimplification that causes second visits. The C37's mounting pattern and profile don't match ABB's frame, so you may be looking at an adapter plate or panel rework. That turns a 30-minute swap into an afternoon.

Real talk: I've been burned on this myself. A few years ago I cross-referenced a contactor based on specs alone, skipped the physical check, and the customer spent 11pm drilling a new mounting pattern. I won't promise a C37 replacement is drop-in without seeing a photo and nameplate. Any distributor who does that over the phone without asking questions is guessing.

That said, when the C37 is weeks out and an ABB contactor is in stock tomorrow, a properly done cross-reference can keep a production line alive. Just verify before you buy.

5. What is a membrane contactor?

This one gets searched more than you'd think, so let me clear it up.

A membrane contactor is a liquid-processing device used for degassing, gas transfer, and CO2 removal. It works by passing water or another liquid across a hydrophobic membrane that lets gas move through while keeping the liquid in place. It's a filtration and separation product, not an electrical switching device.

ABB doesn't manufacture membrane contactors. ABB makes electrical contactors—the devices that switch motors and power circuits. The overlap in the word "contactor" is just a search coincidence.

I had a call last year from a plant that "urgently needed a membrane contactor." After a few questions, it turned out their degassing skid needed a standard ABB contactor to switch the pump motor. The membrane part of the system came from another supplier entirely. We solved the real problem once we identified the actual component.

So if you landed here looking for a membrane contactor, you're probably looking for a specialty filtration supplier. If you need an electrical contactor to switch a motor—including on a degassing skid—that's what we do. The first question is always: what are you switching?

6. How fast can I get an ABB contactor when I need it right now?

This is where the rubber meets the road. Common ABB models—the A9 through A30 range, the AF09 through AF26 range, and their accessories—are regularly stocked at large distributors. Same-day pickup is often possible if we get the call before the afternoon cutoff. If the part has to come from a regional warehouse, next-day air typically puts it on the dock by 10:30 the next morning.

But speed alone isn't the point. Certainty is.

In March 2024, a client called at 3:45pm on a Thursday. An AF16 had failed on a packaging line, and downtime was costing roughly $6,000 an hour. We had the part, got it to a courier by 5pm, and it landed at 10:30 Friday morning. The expedited freight was $89. That $89 wasn't just for a faster truck—it was for the guarantee that the line restarts Friday, not Monday. The alternative was standard three-day shipping and a weekend shutdown that would've cost a hundred times that amount.

There's something satisfying about hearing that line come back up and knowing your coordination helped make it happen. But the smarter move is avoiding the emergency entirely: keep a spare for critical motor circuits, and call early when something sounds wrong. The 15 minutes it takes to confirm the right part over the phone is cheaper than the freight for the wrong one.
